My first real awareness of Toby occurred in the fireplace scene in Jane Eyre (2006) which I watched during the COVID-19 lockdown where I live. The camera was in extreme close up and he was just…just 🔥 well aside from his looks, his Rochester was playful and sad underneath the crankiness and not at all creepy (the original Rochester talks about getting “sweet fresh pleasure“ 36 hours after meeting Jane. Ew). So I looked him up having no idea of his family background and was delightfully surprised. I followed him into Black Sails even though I usually can’t stand shows with that level of gore and violence. Toby’s singular skill and ability to inhabit his character is irresistible. He is hilarious in Vexed, breathtaking in Twelfth Night, scary villainous in Die Another Day and had such fun playing the professor in Believe. To paraphrase Eleanor in Black Sails, I am devoted to him now.

The first time I saw him was in “photographing fairies.” But when I really liked it it was in “Jane eyre” and it already made me hallucinate in “Blacksails” . I think his performance in “blacksails” was the turning point.

I first saw Toby in Black Sails and was blown away by his performance as Captain Flint! The depth he was able to create for him was phenomenal! You were able to love him and hate him at the same time while really being able to put yourself in his boots! Hands down, my favorite character ever throughout all of the entertainment business! 🖤🏴‍☠️
